ok, so i got Rappelz today, started it up, and (after changing the graphics settings) killed a couple things, then logged off. afterwards, the computer had what wikipedia described as a "memory leak" that happens from Rappelz on low-end computers. this means i can't open any other programs or anything until it's restarted, and i have to restart it manually because i can't get the shutdown box to come up either. wikipedia also says that it happens on the high end computers too, but they can remain stable. my question is: is there a way to keep this from happening, fix it, etc? i can't exactly restart this computer every time i play the game.

edit: also, does anyone know when the official forum is coming back online? i'd post this there if it wasn't down...

Okay, well, don't take everything Wiki says to be true. The system shock from the game and the lag that follows usually tones down within a few minutes, maybe more. Just got to be patient. And to answer your actual question, no there isn't any way to fix this, or at least that I know of. Also, if you are kicked from the game and want to continue, (by being kicked, I mean disconnection or a Korean error, ect) just wait for the system lag to die down, and then Ctrl Alt Delete and find a program called "SFrame.exe" and end the process. Then you just start that game and enjoy Smile

the problem is that it sat there for an hour, and when i came back to the computer, it wouldn't do anything. i couldn't even get it to bring up ctrl+alt+delete. i think. i might have an idea, if i can get my dad to let me try it again. (his computer) although, as soon as i came back, i tried to open the launcher, so that might have something to do with it.

edit: WOOHOO! it works. all i had to do was *not* open any programs, and end that process via task manager. thanks for the help and idea, now my dad won't make me delete the game!

Go to start program, run and services.msc and enter, and disable any services you don't need to start up. Or go to start run and type msconfig in, and uncheck load startup items on windows start up. Then you will have less items loading in memory, which means more memory available for you to use. If your dad allows this of course.

um, i think i've found some things in the services.msc i could turn off, but what would unchecking that box in msconfig do... keep anything in startup from running when windows is started? because that could be bad... affraid

Leave the services alone, they are already set to what they are designed to be set to.

If you need more memory, try closing other open programs such as Instant Messengers, media players, and other non-essential items.

Again, do not alter or disable any services. Leave them set to the factory defaults.

I have seen many people break their computers to the point where they could not operate normally by tampering with their services.

You can see where there have been tests performed to see if the "service tweaks" help any, when in actuality they do not.

I wouldn't go so far as to say don't disable services, but I do agree you should know exactly which ones can be disabled before you make changes there. Don't forget that some third party programs that do not affect the operating system run as services and can use up memory. So don't discount this, just be careful.

The MSConfig idea though is valid. Again be careful and know for sure. One wise bet is to check the 'hide microsoft startup items' and remove the others, but know which ones to turn back on or leave alone as you will probably disable your printer among other thing. Or just pick and choose to get rid of things like y messenger and other IM clients that sit in your system tray. Lots of these can be removed from the options menu of each offending program too.

On a low end computer this can improve game exprience dramatically.

Laughing so untrue dude. You can usually tell which ones you need and dont need. And its safe to have nothing startup in the startup tray. All that is just for quicker access to other programs. Alot of services are automatically turned on that alot of people dont use. Like Remote Connection, Background intelligence service(i dont run that), I have the help center disabled. Alot of people freak out when they look at the menu thinking it will screw their computer up if the disable anything, actually it wont. Also it will even tell you if you can or can't disable a service, or warn you. I have also done it for fun, by disabling all services and comp still boots up, and i can play a game.

So you disable Remote Connection(?), BITS (Background Intelligent Transfer Service) and Help Center disabled huh?

Remote Connection - Be a bit more specific on which that is?

Help Center - (Assuming you mean Help & Support) Well, if anyone ever attempts to connect to your pc for Remote Desktop Assistance, you can't load it. Many techs use this from call centers if the user is online. Especially if they get online tech support from the manufacturers website. Not just anyone can use this, they have to be invited in most cases. Windows Messenger allows you to invite people to use the Remote Desktop. Having the Help Center disabled also stops any users from using the integrated Help.

BITS - With this one disabled, you're not able to get Windows Updates at all. BITS is required for the Automatic Updates service, BITS itself and even Crypographic services are all needed. If you disabled BITS you can't get Windows Updates. Without Windows Updates, your computer is at more risk to problems and exploits where a malicious user could take control of your system.

-----

I'm out there in the tech field. Trust me, it's a bad idea to alter your services.

I have had computers come in with the problem of "Brand name product" is not working. Sometimes they provide the error message. These users always blame either Microsoft/Windows or the maker of the product.

When it's the case of disabled services, I format and reinstall their OS. They get their data backed up on a few DVDs for a low cost, but their main charge is from the OS reinstall and labor.

I've had customers ask about the problem and I tell them directly what the issue was. I'll inform them that required services for the program were disabled. When they ask how, I inform them that "tweakers", usually gamer kids or uneducated users mess with the services to "gain performance" when there is no real gain at all. Often I get questions on how to prevent their kids from disabling the services and I inform them of some of the best methods.
